Redcedar Retreat

This is a third-year studio project involving the research and development of a resort. After conducting extensive research on hotel design, target markets, location, and feasibility, I have developed the program and concept for Redcedar Retreat.  The resort is an eco-wellness destination, featuring luxury cabins and beautiful wellness-focused facilities including a spa, a yoga studio, an art-therapy pottery studio, and a restaurant.

The presentation package for this project includes detailed drawings of the main lodge, which features the reception and lounge, restaurant, yoga room and pottery studio.  Stay tuned in the coming weeks to see the construction package for these spaces too!

Location: Buttle Lake, Strathcona Park, Vancouver Island

Date Completed:   Spring term 2025

The concept for the Redcedar Retreat is centred around it's stunning location in Strathcona Provincial Park, Vancouver Island. My aim with the design was to create a space that perfectly complimented it's natural environment, making for a relaxing, restorative eco-wellness experience immersed in nature. For this reason, I chose neutral colours and natural materials, made use of tons of natural light, and incorporated a number of organic forms and natural motifs.

A source of inspiration that I used to really enhance the connection with the environment in this space was the Western Redcedar tree. Western Redcedar is common on Vancouver Island and has a long history of deep cultural importance. Used in many forms as natural medicine, it is the perfect inspiration for a wellness retreat in this forest region. My design of the resort draws on the natural colours, textures, forms and patterns that Redcedar has to offer.
